Snapchat Follows TikTok?

Being one of the top 15 most used and most popular social media application out there in the world, Snapchat provides its users to connect with friends, share any moments they want, play games and quizzes and edit pictures and videos with innovative tools (the reason why most teenagers love this application). Snapchat further allows friends to see each other’s locations on an in-built map. It further provides a functionality called Snapstreaks where the app requires users to exchange messages with each other for as long as possible (i.e. 1 month, 1 year, etc). To use this application, the users simply have to sign up with their name, email address and date of birth.

With TikTok being banned in some countries, Social Applications are rolling out similar features to drag users to their platforms and increase their app’s usage. Snap Inc recently shared a post regarding a new feature called “Spotlight”. This feature will allow users to create and share short videos which will be viewed publicly within the application, a direct competition to Instagram Reels. Instead of sharing the videos to friends, the functionality will allow users to directly share on Spotlight. The post further mentioned how Snap Inc will provide $1 Million every single day until the end of this year 2020 to users whose videos will boost the most engagement within users and will reach to the top on Spotlight.

The algorithm of the videos will depend upon if a user finds a particular video more interesting that other videos, how much time the user spent watching a particular video or if the video was skipped by the user, if it was further shared with other users, etc. The videos posted from private accounts will be featured within Spotlight without a name attached to it and the users will not be able to comment or message separately. Spotlight will be available to users in Australia, the U.K, Canada, the U.S., Ireland, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and France.
